Which Porsche prototypes are on file?
The archive covers factory prototypes from 1939 to today. Each record is stamped by whether its core story rests on documents or on gaps in the record.
- 1939 Type 64 Three aluminium coupés built for a Berlin–Rome race that never ran. One survives. Documented
- 1948 356 No. 1 The mid-engined Gmünd roadster, first registered as K 45-286. Documented
- 1959–60 Type 754 T7 The four-seat study where the 911 roofline first appears. Documented
- 1962–64 901 prototypes Replacement chassis 13321 to 13360. Three survive; the fate of several is not recorded. Unknown

How do you check whether a Porsche is really a prototype?
You check a prototype claim in four steps, and each step can only rule things out. Skipping one is how a production car becomes a “lost prototype”.

Read the chassis number
The number’s format tells you the model year and type it was stamped as. It never tells you colour, options or history.

Place it in its range
901 prototypes used replacement numbers from 13321. The first production 911s run from 300001. A number outside the documented range needs an explanation.

Get the factory record
Order a Porsche Production Specification or Kardex copy. It records how the car left the factory, not how it was later modified.

Inspect the physical evidence
Stamped numbers, body tags, welds and paint layers. A prototype claim that rests on a single part or tag is a claim, not a record.

What was the $21 million “911 T prototype”?
It was a yellow slant-nose Porsche offered on eBay Motors with a $21,000,000 starting bid, promoted from this very domain between 2012 and 2016. Its own chassis number describes a 1971 production car.

Porsche prototype questions, answered
What is a Porsche prototype?
A Porsche prototype is a pre-production or experimental car built by the factory to develop a new model, engine or race car. Examples include the 1939 Type 64, the 901 prototypes of 1962–64 that became the 911, and race prototypes such as the 956 and 963. Production cars later modified to look different are conversions, not prototypes.
How many Porsche 901 prototypes were built?
Porsche built 13 pre-production 901s: seven in 1963 and six in 1964, numbered from replacement chassis 13321. Chassis 13326 "Quickblau", 13327 "Barbarossa" and cabriolet 13360 are known to survive.
Can a VIN prove a Porsche is a prototype?
No. A chassis number shows the type and model year a body was stamped as. Prototype status has to be proven with factory records, such as a Kardex or Porsche Production Specification, plus physical inspection by a marque specialist.
Was the $21 million "911 T prototype" on eBay real?
Its chassis number, 9111120162, decodes as a production 1971 911 T coupé bodied by Karmann, and its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity also lists a 1971 911 T. No published factory record supports the claim that it was a 1963 prototype.
