Short answerA Porsche VIN from 1981 onward has 17 characters. Positions 1–3 are WP0 for sports cars or WP1 for SUVs. Positions 4–6 carry body, engine and restraint codes on North American cars and ZZZ elsewhere. Positions 7, 8 and 12 together give the internal type, such as 930, 964 or 992. Position 9 is a check digit in North America, position 10 the model year, position 11 the plant, and the last five the serial.

Every Porsche built for the 1981 model year and later carries a 17-character VIN. Unlike the older chassis numbers, the format is the same on a 944, a Cayenne and a 992. Put a VIN in the card above and each field is decoded and stamped; the tables below show the rules behind it.

Each position in a Porsche VIN answers one question, and North American VINs use three positions differently from the rest of the world.

How do you read the model type from a Porsche VIN?
You read the model type by joining positions 7, 8 and 12. The result is Porsche’s internal type number, explained further on the Porsche type numbers page.

Because the letters repeat, the model type decides the decade: a VIN with type 930 and year G can only be 1986, while type 992 with a year letter N is 2022.

What does WP0 mean in a Porsche VIN?
WP0 is Porsche’s world manufacturer identifier for passenger cars: W for Germany, P for Porsche and 0 for a car. SUVs such as the Cayenne and Macan use WP1.
Why does my Porsche VIN have ZZZ in it?
ZZZ in positions 4–6 is a filler used on cars built for markets outside North America. North American VINs use those positions for body, engine and restraint system codes.
How do I find the model year in a Porsche VIN?
The model year is position 10. Letters B to Y cover 1981–2000 (skipping I, O, Q and U), digits 1–9 cover 2001–2009, and the letters restart with A for 2010, so a B can mean 1981 or 2011.
How do I tell which 911 generation a VIN belongs to?
