Short answerA Porsche 911 VIN changed format several times. Cars from 1964–1967 use six-digit numbers from 300001; 1968 uses eight digits and 1969 nine, both starting 11 for 911; 1970–1979 cars use ten digits starting 911 or 930, where digit 4 is the model year, digit 5 the variant and digit 6 the body. From 1981 every 911 has a 17-character VIN starting WP0, with the generation in positions 7, 8 and 12.

What were the first Porsche 911 chassis numbers?
The first Porsche 911 chassis numbers were six-digit numbers starting at 300001. Published chassis tables list these ranges for the first years.

The 911 S shared the 1966 ranges, recorded in some tables with an S suffix, so the variant has to be confirmed with the factory record. The pre-production 901 prototypes before 300001 used replacement numbers from 13321, covered on the 901 prototype chassis page.
Which digit shows a 911 T, E, S or Carrera?
On 1970s ten-digit chassis numbers, the fifth digit shows the variant and the sixth the body.

Two examples: 9114600001 reads as a 1974 911 Carrera coupé, and 9111120162 as a 1971 911 T coupé bodied by Karmann. The second is the number from the $21 million “911 T prototype” listing. For the Turbo, the number starts with its own type: 9305700001 is the first 1975 911 Turbo.
How do modern 911 VINs show the generation?
Modern 911 VINs show the generation in positions 7, 8 and 12 read together. A 1980s G-model reads 911 and a Turbo 930; later cars read 964, 993, 996, 997, 991 or 992.
