Short answerThe Porsche 911T was the entry-level long-hood 911, sold from the 1968 model year until 1973. It used a 2.0-litre carburetted flat-six with 110 hp for 1968–69, a 2.2-litre with 125 hp for 1970–71 and a 2.4-litre with 130 PS in most markets for 1972–73, while US cars used fuel injection. The 911T is the most common long-hood 911 and the car at the centre of this domain’s best-known story: a 1971 911T Karmann coupé presented as a lost prototype. Knowing what a normal 911T looks like on paper is the fastest way to test any claim about one.
What was the Porsche 911T?
The Porsche 911T was the entry model of the classic 911 range from the 1968 model year to 1973. It replaced the 912’s role as the affordable way into the 911 body, with a detuned carburetted flat-six, simpler trim and steel wheels as standard. The T sat below the fuel-injected 911E and the top 911S.

In 1969 the wheelbase grew from 2,211 mm to 2,268 mm on all 911s, which improved stability. The 1968 911T production year counted 2,132 cars: 1,611 coupés and 521 Targas.

How do you identify a 911T by chassis number?
You identify a 911T from its ten-digit chassis number between 1970 and 1973. The first three digits are the type, the fourth the model year, the fifth the variant and the sixth the body. A fifth digit of 1 means 911T.

Who built Karmann 911T coupés?
Karmann in Osnabrück built a share of 911 coupé bodies, including 911Ts, alongside Porsche’s own body plant. In 1970–1971 the body digit 2 records a Karmann coupé. We have not found a reliable published split of how many 911Ts had Karmann bodies.
What should you check before buying a 911T?
Before buying a 911T, check that its engine and specification still match its chassis. Many 911Ts were upgraded with larger or fuel-injected engines, S trim, flared wings or later bodywork, and some have been converted to look like rarer cars.
