Porsche # Type List Omissions
Porsche type list
Porsche established a numeric record of projects known as the Porsche Type List. Examination of this Type List reveals interesting chronological alignment of Type #s that is certainly Not Perfect?
The Type List #s are Inconsistent and probably made rather spontaneously. Porsche skipped many #s in the sequence and sometimes the omissions were Accidental and some deliberate. The Type List also leaves Significant Gaps and rarely reveals the source of information. For example, the Type 60 with it's many "k" variations to designate different body styles, also type 356 tube frame chassis then modified to a sheet metal chassis with the annotation 356/2 but the /2 later reused to identify different body engine offerings. The variants 356 SL,356 A,356B,356C designations and in parallel there were the 356 T1 through 356 T7 designations.Example type 356C car fitted with a type 616/16 engine and type 741A transaxle.
The Type 901 had to be externally re-designated as the 911 for trademark infringement threat by Peugeot Co.
During the hectic war years many number in the 200 were skipped,in the 400 series only six numbers were used, the last being 425.
Type 500 in Stuttgart was relatively tightly packed through the 700's and into the early 800's.
That was where the list stood when the time came to pick a number for the successor to the 356.
To get it they jumped over many 800 numbers and picked 901.Why?
The real reason is much more prosaic.
The additional information since that time has been supplemented and in some cases corrected. The circuitous Route the Porsche Company has traveled with no Official Explanation!
